Something that works pretty well is to have a concept and that concept to be two things that are completely different stuff.
Like I will do some clothing for character designs in a fantasy era, I can came up with concepts that are a mixture of Art Nouveau and fishes from the sea.
Or some futuristic characters that I input into the clothing design features for their zodiac sings in colors and textures, like inspire a woman character with a Lion that is something very male.
Mixture of none related concepts can give you a very rich and unique concept to work with and you don't have to tell that you where aiming for Tropical forest birds feather colors, just have something colorful that people don't understand why the colors are so appealing.
