Right, so after a little more then over a year of not being able to use my cintiq I am now finally am able to connect my tablet to my computer (needed to get a new computer... then once that happened I needed to buy a new video card... and money does not come easily for me so it too a good long while) and now open canvas, my handy little sketching program I like to play with when not working on a serious project as well as right now the only program I can afford at this time at the price of free, doesn't want to open on me. So I am in need of a nice free drawing program I can use for my doodling purposes... before I go nuts from not being able to draw with my tablet after finally thinking that I could.

I'm not looking for something crazy involved like photoshop, just something that I could do sketches at the LEAST on. Preferably with layer options.

Inkscape, and if you are a student in a college then try out MS Expression Studio its free through DreamSpark. The MS program is not a pure drawing program though, it is hybrid between bitmap and vector. Inkscape is purely vector.

There are several, depending on OS, and support for tablets is in most or all of them IIRC:

Inkscape
GIMP (including Gimpshop)
ArtRage
Krita

Almost forfot:

Dogwaffle
Smoothdraw NX
Artweaver
Synfig (if you want to do animation)
