Photographer's less common?

Hello all,
I received an invite like so many others here because of my deviantART account (I'm assuming) and, being interested in new art sites as a way of spreading my art around, thought I'd try it out. The layout is well-done, the submission process simple and quick (and bug-free, hallelujah!), the concept of mashing together a social networking site and a professional art-critiquing site nice, but I've discovered a little quirk. All but one or two of the main page features are digital art creations, digital paintings, photo-manipulations, etc. No traditional art! Sure, there's the random photograph and MAYBE a painting, but very little else. So I'm beginning to think this isn't the place for traditional artists (ie. photographers, painters, writers, musicians) and rather a place to showcase the wonders of the computer age. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, don't get me wrong, but what about the rest of us?

Thoughts? Opinions?

If you strongly disagree, please feel free to let me know; but show me what I've missed in my cursory exploration of this site. I'll gladly admit I'm wrong and thank you for showing me the niche for the rest of us amongst a proliferation of digital art.

I'm hoping that maybe there are going to be more traditional artists out there, I've been poking around and this seems to be more of a blend of people who do touch in a a lot of things. There are a lot more of digital artists than anything as of now that I see, but the site is growing day by day. I would say that it is possible that maybe the people that are picking the featured art lean toward the digital over the traditional, or that the photographs, or paintings have not been pushed into the foreground.

Yeah there doesn't seem to be as many of us (photographers) as I was expecting but I guess in time maybe? There's such a blend between digital art and photography now, the line is getting murkier between the two.

lol I see your point. And it's a good one. Most of the staff or people who pick the featured works are programmers or digital artists themselves so I can see how it might seem a little biased. I promise you that was not our intention! Everything around here has been kinda hectic as of late so we really haven't had the chance to crawl as far into the community submissions as we'd like.

We're coming close to launching a new user group called " Scouts " who's only job is to go digging through all of the submissions and picking out some great new pieces to feature. They'll be people with great knowledge and interest in art in general, not just one specialty, so we can try to balance everything out.

As far as the categories on the front page, yes we know. happy.gif We're going to try getting more traditional art and literature tabs in there soon. We're trying hard to meet the needs of all of our members whether they're a majority or not. Just simply too much to do with too few doing it unfortunately haha. All we can ask for is a little patience and understanding smile.gif

Thank you for bringing this up so we could address it! Please let us know of anything else or if you have any more questions or suggestions! biggrin.gif

There is heaps of traditional stuff, look under the browse tab. I didn't really notice the digital bias but I don't exactly look that hard at a category either smile.gif

I got invited because of DA as well, and the easy implementation of my current gallery was easy. Seems like a place that can grow into something big.

In the future I'd like to put together showcases on specific themes in various specific categories both in traditional and digital. I did one on landscapes/scenery in photography today for earth day. http://akujin.artician.com/blog/2009/04/20...-for-earthday1/

In the future, when groups is done, we'll probably have a number of people doing this and combining them into various blog feeds on various topics to people's interests.

It's not un-like searching for a good Vino...on the surface it might feel like looking for a Pino Gris in the Burgundy section.

Well... I just arrived with a bunch of photography, I also hang out over at Flickr website...

At least there are a few other photographers around here, someone invited but I'm not sure who as I have never posted anything at Deviant Art.

Anyway... I envision using this site as a portfolio site for my best stuff, while uploading the bulk of my photography to Flickr still...

Everything takes times to settle and im sure this site will grow quickly with many photographers, traditional artists, and others. The Developers made the site easy to use and kept things simple. Though i wish i can change the colours of my banner tongue.gif it would be nice. tongue.gif

In some way i think it is a digital media as you said the technology is fast developing, but i feel they are still two differnt thing in a way. Digital media you can edit them to your desire anytime you want into many things with help of some programs, but traditional photograph, you do it from what you have and is getting natural flow. I think anyways.laugh.gif

It's been a recent thing I noticed, what with the traditional film RITZ camera shops closing down everywhere.

It seems like everyone's going digital unfortunately.

I myself work almost exclusively with film, not having a worthwhile digital camera to work with. Always loved the aesthetics of developing and working with real film.

I reckon digital and film can sit happily alongside each other. Both are photography and photography for us anyway is the most exciting medium.

Oh that reminds me. are allowed to post about a competition we are currently running here? Totally cool if we can't - just wanted to ask (courtesy...happy.gif)
