I have heard many things. But I will not install anything mac has touched, they are slow as hell @ fixing issues. And when they do have an update for something, you will click update and before you know it you have itunes, quicktime, etc.

Annoying!

Very true I do hate that, I hate software that auto-updates without my permission and adds software to the list.

True. I'm sure Safari's a great browser but my Opera isn't going to be replaced any time soon tongue.gif

Is only great if you have tried it.

Safari 4 is a designer's dream browser, simplistic, straight forward and quickness.

Chrome + Firefox = No need for safari.

It's a cool browser, but the only reason I use it is to test out websites wink.gif

I just switched back from firefox to safari for about the 4th time now and the speed improvement which follow are amazing.
I hate to say it but firefox on mac is just too slow, even without any plugins. Not just the start-up time either, everything from page loading to javascript handling seems faster.

It's just a more fluid browsing experience for me with less waiting that came firefox. Although I do miss StumbleUpon smile.gif

I've been using Safari since the early betas that didn't support tabs. I guess browser preference just depends on which platform you are using. On OS X, Firefox used to be terrible, but most of the problems have been fixed in 3.0. I started using Safari before Firefox was even released, so I just stuck with it.

Safari 4.0 is a nice update, but the most important features to me aren't the visual changes: I'm a fan of any speed boost I can get and the full-text history searching. The better search bar is also nice, but I was previously using Inquisitor for the same purpose.

I'm also a fan of Safari's rendering engine, WebKit. It's technologically impressive, and doesn't have all of the cruft that Gecko (Firefox's Engine) has built up the years. Mozilla has made a lot of improvements to the engine, but at its core it still has remnants of the Netscape 4.0-era engine.

And as a side note...

Safari 4, Chrome and Opera are lately making Firefox look pretty dated, not to say that all of them are constantly gaining speed bumps while firefox gets one after a big wait.

Firefox 3.1 will have a new JavaScript engine, of the same type that powers Safari and Chrome. This will at least bring Firefox up to the same level, and some people say that it is even faster than Safari/Chrome. Firefox 3.1 is currently at beta2, so the release isn't too far off. Firefox is not behind, they just take longer to release.
