Searching for Tips for Graphic Design

I have been caught in quite of rut in drawing for almost a year now where I have had a lack of inspiration and such and I went to ask my old art teacher and he suggested a new medium. Unfortunately, he didn't have the time to help me out but I searched around and I want to try out graphic design. I wouldn't call myself too good of an artist but I learn quickly and so I didn't think it would be hard to start a new medium on the computer. I have used PS for two years and know most of the stuff on there but I don't think I have ever really put much of it to good use and I have basics in Painter IX, I also have had a Wacom tablet for several years. Even with this, I found myself at loss of where to start. Which programs to use? How to start a project (even how to do a project)? What types of graphic design are there?

For some of you these might seem like stupid questions but please help me out on trying to understand this new medium without taking a class. I might even understand it more than I think I do, I just need a starting off point.

Well, where to start? There's not a lot that can't be done in photoshop, plus you got a wacom, you got the best 2 tools you could want. So I think the best way to get inspiration is to get yourself over to DA and check out different styles, pick one you like and try styling in the same manner, then slowly move onto different styles. You will soon be flying. Good luck

Graphic design is a lot of things... but I guess if you come from drawing maybe you should begin by investigating the hole "typography" thingy. The relationship between letters make the world go around. They are also a good starting point when you have creative blanks.

I say this a lot to friends and acquaintances that are burnt out or just lacking that inspiration. Take the time to just get into your space. Step away from the computer out of that chair and go to a place you can just relax. Take a sketch book, music, or anything else you would like. for instance I tend to go to My favorite coffee shop sit in the back room with my ipod, a cup of coffee and My sketch book and just doodle. This isn't about coming up with ideas but just getting back to basics. Don't pay any mind to anyone just do your thing clear your head and get back to your art.

As stated about going to DA and finding what catches your eye. What do you like and what draws you in? What style of art really speaks to you? Take these questions and just let them guide you to your personal style. From there it is really just about researching and looking through out the net for tutorials. Just remember when working with these tutorials and gaining inspiration to make them your own use them as a guide.

Best of luck to you.. and I hope this has helped.

Have a look at these videos:
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/lang/en...ts_serious.html
http://www.ted.com/talks/philippe_starck_t..._on_design.html

Design is not the same as art. Art is done for one's own satisfaction/pleasure, whereas a design is always created with a purpose in mind and it is created for a target audience, not for the designer, and is hence planned out to be suited to their needs. Graphic design is making a conscious effort to communicate an idea or concept through any medium required (could be digital or traditional) for a very specific purpose. So, in essence, you could do graphic design through just your drawings without ever touching a PC if you wanted to. smile.gif

In any case, what I suppose you're more interested in is creating ART using a digital medium. Again, this is not the same as graphic design. tongue.gif Here's a link that might help you with photoshop and other software....

...and something to get you started with very basic graphic design theory smile.gif
