Size of your canvas?

LicoMomo posted Apr 21 2009, 01:50 AM:
I'm really curious about the canvas size that you usually use for your artworks. As far as I know, the size has to be large enough if you want it to be printed. When I just started, I used 1000 x 1200 (around that size). But when I tried sizes like 3000 x 3600, it slows down my computer a great deal. And many resources cannot be used because of the low resolution.

What's the size that you're currently using? (No need to be exact)
And thanks a lot. =)

1000 square usually, but I'm not usually looking to do massive hardcore prints, hell mostly it's 1000 square because I'm doing a texture I couldn't work out or just plain can't do a procedural for smile.gif

For digipainting I usually start with 1000 square and expand it out if I have to and crop it if necessary at the end. If I get to the end.

as a painter the bigger the canvas the better it is, because when reduced for web viewing the detail is compressed and the piece looks a whole lot better, than if it had been produced the same way on a smaller canvas..

i work at 3000x1600 usually, which is landscape I believe, but for prints and commercial work its more often than not over 5000x3000, if necessary.

I appreciate your replies. So I guess I'll just go for the size as large as my RAM can tank. =)

Yah for digi paintings I sketch stuff on like a 1000 px canvas and resize to about 3000px or somewhere around there. It holds alot more detail.
It slows my computer down SO much too! That's the only thing I don't like.

for web i always start with 1000 square then crop it down.
for print, I base it on the size of the final print
so like, 8.5X11 inches for standard size, and I set the DPI to 400
it's a large file, so if your computer can't handle it, you'll have to use someone else's computer or upgrade.
but I recently did some huge poster that was like 24X38 inches or something, 400 dpi, I love my little macbook pro, it handled it nicely smile.gif

I tend to use an A4 sized canvas. Even though I don't print it out, I find that it IS generally better to start big then resize smile.gif

Hm. 10"w x 15"h and 10"w x 7.5"h @ 600 pixels per inch usually... at least that's how they start. I'm typically drawing comics.

I generally go with 2000x2000 and size down, though as I've been working more, I've been going up in the sizes from the start.

Could anyone explain the A2-A3-A4 lingo?

The canvas size varies. It's the resolution that matters, if you're printing. If it's for web, 72 dpi should do it. For print, I never go below 300 dpi.

1000x1000 is my first start. At this size, all is fast (computer, getting images element to help in the creative process, etc)
So for screen, no problem, and for printing, I enlarge, and then rebuild the image if needed (for pixelled part).. This helps a lot to enhance the final visual.. But costs more time
If I know from the start it is for printing, this can vary, (2000x2000 // 3000x3000 or more)
For 3D textures, I can go to 10.000x5000 (size of the earth planet map I am currently working on)

I generally work at 3000 x 3000. If landscape type, then the height stays 3000 and the width goes however much higher. Though I work at that size, I don't usually display it at that size. XD;; My comp can handle it pretty well, though it might slow down a bit if I've been working on it for hours and have a ton of layers. XD;;

when I am working on the comic pages, I do each render at 3500 by 35000, this gives me good size and plenty of space to cut out whats not needed. I then introduce each render into Manga Studio, using a 300 DPI template adapted from Ka-Blam's comic template.
That gives me what I need and gives me plenty of play room to get everything right.
When I am doing arts, I do them around 5000 by 5000

I use an 8.5" x 11" at 300 pixels per inch then crop or expand it depending on what I'm drawing at the time.
That way, when I'm done I have the option to make it a print or not. :>
