Ok so i've been doing graphics for around 4-5 years now, 2-3 years at college, and tbh, i havent learnt anything new, i've learnt more at home on the internet. I guess this is because the teachers here are so fixated on 'drawing'. Anyway, in class so many people copy my work and its soo frustrating, just wondering if any one else gets the same?

Final Fantasy XIV Emblem

My friends and I are starting an FFXIV linkshell for the game that is not to be released for maybe another year. Regardless we're getting our stuff ready and we were wondering if any of you good people would be able to draw us up an emblem. Credit will be fully given, and if your interested in learning more about us just pm me or respond to the thread.

The name of the group is Strawhats which is a reference at the One Piece pirates. What we were thinking for the emblem was something that can be put on a white background of a website and be hung on a black flag. We were thinking along the lines of a Cactuar from the final fantasy series wearing a Strawhat.

Thanks in advance guys.
Okay so, guess what?

Well as some of you may know, im pretty close speaking terms with professional industry artists / concept artists / digital matte artists, and well a few days ago I spoke to Dylan Cole, and requested a interview with him -- He got back in touch and has accepted the interview and said that he has spare time around mid-november as he is working on a few titles at the moment.

So from now until early-November I have decided to turn this into a little thing for all your Artician members, If you'd like to visit here for more details on how you can put your questions to Dylan Cole himself, (and of course learn a bit more about him if you don't know who he is already!)

if I receive a fair amount of unique and amazing questions, you can be sure to see more things like this in the future, with other professional artists being interviewed.

Peace out!,
Kevin.

DD's What are they good for?

Yehp today another DD was delivered to my doorstep.
The question I have, after receiving some and actually deleting a couple; what does the artist get from a DD?
First thing that pops into one's mind is exposure, yeahp a piece that had several hundred views will get several thousand views in a matter of days, the question is who is viewing it? friends of course, maybe even family, and then? who are the other 20 30 thousand people? I had a couple of my DD's with the "print available" activated, did those sell?.....not a single one.
So are this thousands of people just wallpaper seeking freaks? will this exposure ever provide views and contacts with interesting people?
My guess its that DA its a bowl of soup the size of an ocean, that consists mainly of kitty snapshots, and poor manga spiced with millions of look at me vacation fotos, and good art its lost in the middle of all this. A DD boost you up to the surface, but if no one happens to be there at this time, you will sink back into the mess once again and all there is to show its the view count in your image that has slowed down once again.

Selling Art

Hello everyone. I would like to get some opinions on the art of selling art. ha. I'm a fairly new artist, only been painting for about 5 years. I sold one painting and a logo. The painting was sold for $300 and the logo was done for $50 I would love to continue selling stuff but I'm not sure my stuff is worth that much money. A mentor of mine said to start at $300 never go lower. But I kind of think i should start lower to get my name out there. I understand the more someone pays for something the more likely they are to take good care of it. Anyways.

Should I start low and get my name out?

Or high and never sell anything?

Dreams

So I spoke with my therapist yesterday on dreams and dreaming. I've been having frequent, lucid dreams involving a lot of action, adventure, and violence. Usually a lot of control over myself in the dreams, no fear, with a goal and obstacle to get over, and when there is fear, I easily fight it. Not to mention psychic powers, but the thing that stands out is the constant flying and that I usually am a bird. I've also had nightmares before involving killing, rape, eating someone else, watching someone else commit suicide, hiding the bodies, running away from a tsunami or plague, etc. Though I've never had the teeth falling out nightmare everyone says to be the most common. Not to mention I've almost strangled myself to death in my sleep (I was dreaming some kid was strangling me).

I find it to be an awesome adventure, not to mention wonderful if you have artist's block and need something to draw, or a story to write.

So I was wondering, what're your most recent dreams about? Have trouble remembering them or not? Any really scary, creepy nightmares you've had? Can you lucid dream? Have you sleep walked or woke up doing something? Stuff like that.

Anime. Wha...?

First off, I'd like to make clear that I am not dissing manga or anime or the people who enjoy it. This is NOT a critique of the art form. It's simply personal oppinions stated to form a basis for a question.

I don't get anime. Or manga, really. I don't understand why soooo many people love it. I'm a HUGE comics fan so one would assume that manga is something I would feel a connection with, yet I don't. I have read numerous mangas, Ghost in the Shell, Domu, etc but I still prefer American/ European comics to manga. As for anime, I've watched a bit but I can't seem to connect with it the way I can with other animated movies/shows.

I think, for me, the biggest hurdle is that, to my eye, it all looks so similar. Perhaps this is due to my limited knowledge of the form but every manga artists looks pretty much like every other manga artist. Now, I admit the same could be said of comic artists however I can think of sever high-profile ones whose styles are hugely different from each other. As I said, this might just be due to the fact that I know a great deal more about comics than I do manga.

I can not place my finger on it exactly but I've never really completely enjoyed any manga I've read. So I'm asking you, the manga/ anime fans, to enlighten me. Explain to me what it is that you enjoy so much, what is it about the medium that speaks to you. This isn't some sort of test, or being a smart-ass on my part. I'm honestly curious and honestly wish to know. There is so much of it out there I feel I'm missing out, but I need to know which way to look at it.

Cheers.

[b]My name is Skye. I only have old, 5 second pictures on my account that in my opinion suck. I'm a blond tomboy;gee, how many of those do you see each day? I think the world is being polluted with greenhouse gases and pink "girlyness". THE END IS NIGH!!!!!!
Peace out
Love wolves
Save the planet

The construction at the ren market is almost done now, so vendors are coming back. (I was a vendor out there for several months.) The holiday season is coming soon enough & for a vendor, that's the time to be out selling your handcrafted stuff. The problem is I work at a department store & holiday season is when it does major business also. The bosses will ask everyone to put in extra hours in the weeks before Xmas--that's a given. But I don't want to be there any more than I have to--I wanna be at the market & on S. Congress for First Thursdays, ferchrissakes! My loyalty is to my business, not to corporate America. But if my boss turns hardassed, it may be my job or my business. I may have a decision to make.

So what should I do when that question comes up? I know what I want to do, but economic necessity is something we all deal with. Me personally am not one for religion, so to me the whole 666 thing means squat.

do you have something more interesting to share than.. a lame 666?

Hello!

I am relatively new to artician (I signed up about 2 months ago but have never really gotten around to seriously checking out the site), and am wondering if anyone would be willing to critique some of my work. I am pretty much self taught in everything art wise since I never really held an interest for anything art related until recently, and would really appreciate some in site from some of my fellow articiians.

Please note that there are only a few writing pieces up on my portfolio for the moment, but I do plan on adding some other mediums as I get a little better. I am currently exploring my (severely outdated) photoshop CS2 and trying out a few different things. Any and all advise in any area is extremely welcomed as I try and broaden my artistic horizons.

http://serenearchives.artician.com/portfolio/

What Are Your Pet Peeves?

Whether it be an annoying personality, a sound, a taste, an animal, a color.. We all have our pet peeves. They can vary from fingernails catching on fabric to piled up dishes, from bright yellow to the sound of teeth scraping against silverware. Some of us might have more than others, and we unfortunately come across new ones as we move on in life. So why don't we share these annoyances, since they're something we all have in common.

Some of mine:
1. The sound of metal scraping against metal, like a knife against a knife
2. Having dirty feet touch a soft fabric, usually after walking outside barefoot
3. A pencil less than incredibly sharp if I'm writing with it - I can't use anything other than a mechanical pencil unless I sharpen the pencil every couple minutes. Drawing and sketching is fine, though.
4. Ugly web design, especially if the content of the site is otherwise good. It's very off putting
5. Puke green ( only shade of green I don't like, which is my favorite color: disliking a shade of my favorite color makes the shade seem even worse lol )

Now go on and rant away!

So just for the hell of it ( im home sick today so ive got nothing better to do), i want to see who replies to this forum post.
Im a 16 year girl going through hell at the moment. High school drama is the worst, and up until this year i was doing a hell of a good job at avoiding it. But then i got into dating, got my first boyfriend, went well for 4 months, but it wasnt working out...We eventually broke up, and that went great, no fighting no destroying of gifts that we gave each other...until now that is. Now hes accusing me of talking behind his back and still liking him (both of which are not true). And also that im complaining about how he likes my best friend (who also hates my guts at the moment...go figure). Anyway, he just threatened to destroy the things i gave him (most of which being pieces of art that i made him...and one of them being my favorite painting ive ever done)
SO YEAH, dont you LOVE high school drama,
well, anyway, point of this fun little forum is, im asking all you teenage art geeks like me for a wee bit of advice on how to handle a situation such as this and to give you the chance to share your exciting stories of high school drama experiences.
I love when i can laugh at my problems and maybe some of you will feel the same satisfaction that im feeling.

Writers

There's a problem of being a writer when it comes to a site like this. I'm not saying that all the work the artists do is easy, I'm saying that it's easy to enjoy their work. With a drawing or painting you can look at it and go "That's an amazing piece of work" or "I didn't like it that much". But with writing you have to read the whole thing to enjoy it, and many people either are lazy or don't have the time to go through and read it all.
I'd like to see if there are others like me who have been having problems in getting their work enjoyed, I look at my lack of comments on any of my work here or on DA every day and wonder just how many other people have the same problem.
I made this topic also because I notice Artician had no boards set up for us writers, and I saw no topics in the main boards either.

My name is Tommy and I like to do some light drawing of creatures and characters if my own, but I'm not very good at it.
My real talent is writing and asside from doing some small fanfiction work I am in the process of writing a novel.
It's a Vampire novel I call "Damned Soul", and I hope the rest of you can enjoy it. ^^

Are there any Sequential Artists here?

One of my biggest pet peeves on Deviant Art was that if I wanted actual paneled comics I'd have to slog through page after page of Marvel and DC fan-art and tonnes of pin-ups. I do hope that won't be a problem here on Artician, but I want to know--are there any Sequential Artists out there? Pencillers, Inkers, Colorists, Writers, Letterers, etc. Or if you just have a love of the paneled page, shout out here!
