Artician Scouts (We Want You!)

<img src="http://s.artician.com/images/promo/scouts.gif" style="margin:0 15px 15px 0;" />

<h5>Artician Scouts?</h5>

As Artician grows (very quickly) we are looking to create a new group of user status'. This user group will be known and referred to as "Artician Scouts". Sounds interesting, you may say to yourself...what's it all about?<br><br>

<h5>Artician is growing, Fast.</h5>
Because Artician is growing so rapidly, it is becoming quite difficult for Artician developers, and even Artician Moderators to keep an eye on all the wonderful talent that Artician has been receiving lately. At this point, thousands of new submissions are coming in daily, and we want to give everyone a chance to shine, especially if they really deserve it. To ensure that no one goes unnoticed, we will do what it takes to keep pushing forth talent, and providing recognition to those diligent hard-working artists, designers, and photographers in the Artician community.<br><br>

<h5>So, how are we going to do this?</h5>
A new team will be assembled on Artician to be known as "Artician Scouts". The primary task of this newly accumulated team will to be seek out talented work found on Artician, as well as other community oriented tasks which are listed below. We hope that by creating a large team of scouts we could expand our seeking ability to provide recognition to artists who would otherwise be lost in the mix. Artician is dedicated to finding alternatives in creative promotion rather than just relying on programmatic algorithms to "find talent, popular users, and good content". In retrospect, we anticipate a preliminary scout team starting out with about 25-30 people..<br><br>

<h5>What will Scouts do?</h5>
<ul>
<li>Will have methods to browse content on a mass scale.</li>
<li>Will be able to influence a featured status on a submission by adding it to a que for further review.</li>
<li>Will be able to moderate content on a basic level, such as "Flag, as mature", or "Correct a category".</li>
<li>Will have the responsibility to be involved with the community, welcome to new users, and guide them with they need help.</li>
<li>Users who are a part of the Scout team will be recognized as such by their account status.</li>
</ul>

<h5>Sounds cool, I'd like to join...</h5>
Artician Scouts will be in effect by the end of March 2009. We will be open to accepting users to be a part of the Scout team. The primary attribute we will be looking for is dedication. If you've been on Artician for a little while, you simply have a better chance of joining the Artician Scout team. However, we've seen plenty of new users who took Artician by storm, and have just be a pleasure to see all around the site. Friendly, patient, influential, and helpful are all keywords that describe a member of the Scout team..<br><br>

<h5>I have an idea!</h5>
If you do, then we want to hear it! Our concepts are fresh, and ready for molding. We would love to hear feedback and suggestions that would improve the formation, organization, and goals of the Artician Scout team. Even if you have other, yet relevant ideas for promoting users, and talent found Artician - we totally are all ears..<br><br>

So, with that said, we will soon begin working on this new platform for Artician Scouts, and you will certainly know the difference. As much as us developers love being involved with the community, we need help from you

Like I always say... Community, you are awesome.

The new viral invite system provides the ability to login to any of the services shown below to retrieve a list of your contacts.
Artician 2nd Round of Promotion coming soon...

Notice:

Artician will be entering the second phase of promotion at the end of the month. We will be expecting large surges of traffic, and new users to Artician. At that time we will be ready to promote some new Moderators, and create another user status known as "Scouts". Scouts will generally be the "eyes" of Artician, and the primary task of this newly assembled team will to be seek out talented work on Artician, and influence a featured status on submissions. The featured work will ultimately will be reviewed by Admin's and soon probably Mods as well. We will create a dedicated topic for Scouts with more details, so look out for that soon as well. (Just to ensure there is no confusion, the Featured Work system will not be entirely controlled by Scouts, other logical algorithms will play their role as well)

Otherwise, get ready to welcome many more new users and talent to Artician. We also have been busy on some new things, which will be announced in the near future. Artician Pro, and Artician Groups are still under development, but they are both 95% complete. We are just tying em' up, and smoothing little things out.

A small word to the community.."You are awesome!"

Hey Everyone,

Just a small update on the performance of Submissions. You will notice a large speed increase when loading thumbnails and images around the site in general. This is due to A. Our new media server that is now serving all the raw static files, and B. The new method in which submissions are received from the media server setup.

We no longer use PHP to connect and receive submissions, as well as handle permissions, rather everything is served raw through the backend by lighttpd media server. We can thank brandon, and chris for their work on this new system. Many updates, and was carried out without any downtime, a smooth and swift transition and a job well done.

File Re-organizing our File Structure

If anyone that was on today may have noticed that some profiles and the site designs were messed up. Thats because we are currently in the process of re-organizing where we serve our static files from. Such as CSS, Images, and Javascript files are being moved to their own subdomains, that includes user profiles. To make things easier, I've coded an automatic detector when updating CSS files so that they will always be fixed even if you use old CSS files. I will be working on moving Javascript files tonight and tomorrow, so if the site starts acting up, you know why. =]

Artician Update....Where are we going?

So, many of you have been asking, where are we going with Artician, how long will we be in beta, and when will we get this place pumping with Artician juice? Well, all those are good questions, and that's why we are here to answer them.

Artician's progress has been increasing rapidly, as we move to the completion of Artician features, and more towards the preparation of promotional aspects. Here are some updates of what we have been working on, as well as some other goodies...

Groups
We are proud to say that Artician will have the most powerful groups system found on any social networking site. With full control over user permissions and content, groups will literally provide the ability to build your own mini community on artician. Managing Submissions, Sets, Packs, Contests, Events, Polls, Blogs, Users, Invitations, and other group interactivity will be EASY, and when we say easy, that means anyone can start their own group on Artician. Groups will have 3 entry paths...

Public Groups - Anyone can join

Private Groups - Users can request to join, and be accepted

Invite Only Groups - Users can only join if they have been invited

The list goes on, and on... but seriously... Most powerful groups system to hit the Internet. Oh, and if you maintain an artgroup, Artician will have everything you need! You can expect to see groups done within this coming month of August...So stay tuned!

Artician Feeds
Feeds, feeds, and more feeds! Now you can literally export almost any content on Artician...From blogs, to submissions, to user content, RSS feeds are available for everything.... You can even create and merge Artician feeds to generate your own custom mix of content from Artician...http://www.artician.com/feeds

Artician Widget
We will soon be releasing a sexy flash widget where you can stream your artician portfolio content on your website, blog, or other profiles...Should be available within the next week or so.. We will announce that in a separate topic so look out for that...

Bug fixes and improvements have been initiated all around the site over the last month or so, so things are really feeling solid. There are still some quirks out there, but we assure you we are aware of most if not all of them.

We have some other really, really, exciting news to share, but not until it's ready!....We know, secrets are no fun!

Check back for more updates!

State of Artician

Artician is currently at a cross roads. On the one hand our community is starting to form up and solidify with a lot of work already finished but on the other hand we have a large list of things we still need to accomplish - from groups, which will help our community grow strong - to prints, which will allow all creative individuals to be successful. But there's still plenty to do on Artician for our small team of web developers.

To illustrate my point here's some statistics,
Users on the site with at least one submission: 216 - Less then 1/5th of all the accounts on the site: 1095

Together, these 216 individuals have submitted 1,925 individual submissions.

Our community by any standard is small but one thing is clear to me: The individuals that do choose to use Artician all feel very passionately that the current status quo of Artistic expression on the Internet does not represent how they feel it should be. That is the gap we are all trying to bridge by allowing creative individuals to have true control of their own artwork and how it is represented on the Internet.

Now...
That being said, we can't do it without you. We can design the best site on the Internet but if no one uses it or participates in it then there's absolutely nothing we can do as developers to make it breath. For that we need you, the users of Artician to help mold and shape the community into what you want it to be. It's not our community, it's your community. Our commitment to not take any outside investment helps us keep it that way. We have all thought about how we would like to do this, or that, to change the Internet. Well, here's your chance. Yes, our community is small but for you, the people who are already members of this community, it is the biggest asset. You have the power to mold this community to be what you want it to be. I appeal to all of you, yes you! Please help us spread the word out that Artician is here to stay and that even in beta we are already offering the absolute best experience to our users - all for free.

So please, talk to your friends and colleagues and help spread the word about the best public art community on the Internet.

Resources

Promotional Graphics

Invite Others

Tour the Site

Portfolio Sets

So we have just completed the "Portfolio Sets" feature. This basically allows you to create, and manage custom sets of work within your portfolio. The interface is very easy to use, and drag and drop features allow you to easily drag around your work into custom sets that you create. You can also set the preferred order of your sets by dragging them above or below each other. Lastly, renaming a set is simple, just click on the title and it will become editable.

From now on, when submitting new work you will have the option of choosing a set to submit it too as well. Hope everyone enjoys the new feature, I certainly found it useful...

Screenshots

New Userpages

Hey everyone,
If you haven't already noticed we added several new userpages recently including "Tags" and "Discussion". The reason for having more userpages like these is to give the user who is browsing the ability to see more of the content they were looking at on your main profile, without leaving your userpage. Some of this content cannot be found around the site in the manner we provide on the userpage, or cannot be found around the site at all. So these pages do there job quite well.

Heres a list of all available userpages and their URL's, I will use mine as an example:

Profile - http://eric.artician.com
Portfolio - http://eric.artician.com/portfolio/
Blog - http://eric.artician.com/blog/
Friends - http://eric.artician.com/friends/
Watchlist - http://eric.artician.com/watchlist/
Favorites - http://eric.artician.com/favorites/
Discussion - http://eric.artician.com/discussion/
Tags - http://eric.artician.com/tags/
Comments - http://eric.artician.com/comments/

We are currently developing a solution if the user has no content on any particular page. One solution is to remove all means of getting to that particular page from the userpage, that way no one will even be able to get to a page, only to find out there is not content there yet. OR we can make a small notice on the actual page when you get there saying "This user does not yet have any Favorites" or something of the sort.

Feel free to provide feedback and suggestions otherwise, Now you can fully browse people's discussion and tags.

All skins have been updated to accommodate the new pages, if anything looks weird, please try to refresh the page several times to make sure your browser isn't caching the CSS styles. If something still looks strange or out of place, you can mention it in this topic.

For those with custom skins:
You can add the following styles anywhere in userpage CSS and customize them as needed. These styles are from the default userpage skins. Those with darker custom skins may want to take the styles from the "Dromewire" skins, or "Freestyle Plus" skin.

Discussion Page CSS:

CODE

/*Custom Styles For Discussion Page*/
#alldiscussion {background:transparent;}
#alldiscussion select#sortDiscussion {float:right;}
#alldiscussion .bottom {display:none;}
#alldiscussion .content {background:transparent;}
#alldiscussion .content div.adboard {background:#fafafa; border-width:1px 0 0 0;}
#alldiscussion .content ul {margin:0; padding:0;}
#alldiscussion .content ul li {background:#f7f7f7; list-style:none; border-top:1px solid #ddd; text-align:left; padding:12px; margin-bottom:15px;}
#alldiscussion .content ul li a.topicTitle {font-size:13px; text-align:left; line-height:1.4em; font-weight:bold;}
#alldiscussion .content ul li a.topicTitle:hover {text-decoration:underline;}
#alldiscussion .content ul li span.reply {display:block; color:#888;}
#alldiscussion .content ul li span.post {color:#777; margin-top:8px; font-size:12px; display:block; clear:both; margin-bottom:7px; line-height:1.5em;}
#alldiscussion .content ul li span.icon {margin:1px 8px 0 -2px; float:left;}
#alldiscussion .content ul li span.info {color:#999; display:block; text-align:right;}

TagsPage / New Nav Tabs CSS:

CODE

/*This is the form that shows, when tagging something*/
div.tag_it{padding:12px 0 12px 10px; border-bottom:1px dotted #ddd;}
div.tag_it p.field_helper {font-size:10px !important;}
div.tag_it input.field {width:400px; background:#fff; border:10px solid #ddd; margin:0 5px 0 0; border-width:2px 1px 1px 1px; color:#{SKINCOLOR_1}; font-family:Arial,Helvetica,Verdana,sans; font-size:14px; padding:0.3em;}
div.tag_it input.field:focus {background-color: #fff;}
div.tag_it input.button {padding:4px 10px;}

/*Secondary Navigation*/
.sectionTabs {font-size:11px; color:#999; border-bottom:2px solid #F0F0F0; padding-bottom:0; margin:0 5px 6px 0;}
.sectionTabs a {padding:4px 7px 4px 7px; display:block; float:left; border-right:1px solid #e9e8e8; border-top:1px solid #fafafa;}
.sectionTabs a:hover {background-color:#f4f4f4; border-top:1px solid #e9e8e8;}
.sectionTabs a.current {background-color:#f4f4f4; border-top:1px solid #e9e8e8; color:#777;}

View Page Updates

As you've probably noticed we have added some additions to the submission view pages within the last few days. Starting with "Related Stuff" and then updating the user module towards the top with some nice options. Along with that Henry and Brandon have implemented a color palette script that analyzes each submission after you submit it on the site, and will pick out the top colors used on that submission. You are now able to see the color palettes on the view pages, under the rating, and will soon be able to browse submissions by colors.

Just wanted to throw out this nice update! Thanks!

Live Edit Comments

Hey everyone,
We have added a nice update to our comments system. You can now edit your comments using the little edit icon above each comment. This will load up your comment into a live editing mode, and you can save right there. Currently, you can only edit your comment up to one hour after posting it. The time limit is there for security reasons. It will be very hard to moderate community issues when someone can change what they have said or posted at any time.

We are still seeing how this will pan out. Perhaps we should enable this time limit of editing comments only after we actually see or experience comment abuse.

Let us know what you think. Otherwise enjoy the feature!
(If you don't see the icon on new comments you've posted, please try ctrl+ refresh to clear old styles out of your browsers cache)

Well done to Akujin on the backend code

Screenshot:

Some forum updates....

Hey everyone,
As you probably already noticed we've revamped some of the forums. We also included and very nice enhancement global navigation throughout the forums, along with the right site with search, today, this week, and subscribe. We hope you find this helpful as we sure did. Navigating around discussion has never been easier. Now that we added this I feel this is what every forum truly lacks - a nice and simple global navigation system that is not a select drop down menu at the bottom of a long page like most forums use to jump from category to category or forum to forum.

Anyway, enjoy the changes, and expect more. (If for any reason the forums look strange or broken be sure that your browser has received the latest styles and caching the old styles. Simply click ctrl+r while on any page in the forums.)

Enjoy!

Artician Email Whitelist (Important!)

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing / marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that our notifications, and publications deliver.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add our publication to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of priviledged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication.

Add Artician to your Whitelist!

User Status Quick Info

Another update,

Up until now, we have only had 2 user status's show on the userpage, that was "Artist" or "Member", since the whole artist account idea has been dropped long ago, we decided to show the general user status' on the site, that is: Administrator, Staff, Moderator, Beta Tester, and Member. In the quick info module on the userpages we have updated the code to display your correct status. We may be adding other groups in the future, but for now this is what we got.

Most likely we will also add this in the forum posts as well. This way, users who are in need of help can easily identify a Moderator, or Staff member and in discussions will value their opinions and answers more than others if they know that they are a part of the Artician team.

Here is a sample screenshot of a user status:

Blog Importer (RSS & Atom)

Alrighty,

It's my pleasure to announce and awesome new feature here on the site, that is going to save our users a lot of time, and make their blogging days much easier. A new utility is available in your blog manager that allows you to import your existing blog from an external RSS or Atom feed. All new imported blog posts get integrated with your current posts in date order, regardless of whether they were imported, or originally posted on Artician.

Currently, you can check to see if you have any new posts in a feed that you have imported by clicking "Find New Entries", but soon this process will be running automatically checking several times a day if you have any new posts on your external blogs, then automatically syncing them to your Artician Blog.

A big hand goes to Akujin for completing the code for this feature with great satisfactory. Any bugs or issues can be addressed here, and Henry will take care of it. Any design issues or quirks can also be addresses here, and I will take care of it.

Check out the Blog Importer

Screenshot:

Blog System Updates

Just wanted to update everyone on a small addition to our Blog Manager. You can now categories your blogs by selecting from a simple drop down list of general blog categories. Up until now we have had no way of categorizing blogs, so we decided to implement a basic category structure, that will be useful in pulling up blogs based on different criteria. If you head over to your Blog Manager you will se the drop down list under the title when adding a new blog, as well as managing your current blogs.

If anyone does have blog entries we recommend that you take a minute or two to just select a category for each

Another big update that we will post about when it's complete, is a blog importer. That means, having the ability to import blog entries from your other blogs very easily by just providing the RSS feed. This will be a great feature and we know all those blogger will appreciate that one. We still thinking of a way to automatically update your artician blog automatically when you have add new entries to your other blog networks.

We will post any updates!

Global Browse Updates

Hey everyone, a nice update to share with everyone.

Browse Node

For starters, we have updated the Browse Node on /home/ you can now easily jump between major categories, and sorting right from the browse node using ajax ("Popular" doesn't work yet). It also now loads a max of 20 thumbnails. Depending on your resolution it may or may not show 20, but it will show as many as it can fit according to your resolution. The max width on Artician is 1200px which is enough to fit 2 rows of 10 in the browse module. It used to be 18, but we changed the way the submissions fit in the browse Node.

Browse Dashboard

Along with that, we have also updated the Browse Dashboard styling and some concept. There is now a "More" button on each module. Both groups, and modules are drag and droppable, and all IE bugs have been fixed in browse. Documentation, and tips will be written for Browse soon since it has many complexities and features, many of which, even you guys probably haven't yet noticed. For example: You can create your own groups on your browse dashboard by click on "Settings", there you can enter the name of a new group to categorize your Browse Dashboard. We have yet to re-do the drop-down browse widget navigation. Right now it's crap, so don't worry bout it.

Browse Toolbar

We have added a nice little toolbar on individual browse pages. With this toolbar we have added a simple previous / next button for easy pagination from the top of the page. You will also notice you can toggle between, Large / Small thumbnails, and Grid / Tile view. Examples will be shown below. Example of and individual browse page: http://www.artician.com/browse/?media=Image

Browse: Large Thumbnails

Browse: Tile View

Browse: Tile View + Large Thumbnails

So that's some of the stuff we have been working on lately. The browse section as a whole still needs a lot of work. But it's certainly getting there.
We have some new features that will be popping out, but we are damn close to launching Artician Land.

Let's keep this place lively and active! Enjoy the new features.

Alrighty,
Just wanted to introduce a nice little addition to the view pages. It is a module in the side panel that shows who has favorited the submission you are viewing. Here's an example: http://jsmonzani.artician.com/portfolio/In...of-Faded-Times/

Hey everyone,
Would like to announce a beautiful new skin with 11 colors, that has been perfected in all browsers from what I see. After a little beating on IE, it couldn't help but to render this beautiful skin as perfect as it should

Big thanks goes to ve1n . The banner is a slice from his work A Q U A D R O M E, which he offered us to use for a skin a little while back if I remember correctly.
Important Submissions Update

Submit
We would like to announce the re-opening of submit. It has been down for almost 2 weeks now as we have been revamping and fixing bugs. This is the reason there has been no new submissions on the site, but now you can change that by going ahead and submitting all the cool new stuff we hope you have been working on

Portfolio Manager
We are also pleased to present your Portfolio Manager. Here you can go and edit any previous work you submitted. For each submission you can: Manage your uploads, crop thumbnails, change title, description, licenses, permissions, add/remove tags, and of course update your submissions, media, styles, and category. There also some other cool tid-bits like editing multiple submissions at the same time, and seeing which ones you have open for editing. Note: Deleting submissions is being worked on, so it's not yet available.

Categories & Styles
Along with all this good news we also have a little not so good news. With this whole revamp, we decided to re-structure our Category/Styles system (the way you categorize your submissions). We made a whole bunch of organizational improvements as well as creating a unique list of style types for each Media, as oppose to a single list of styles for all Medias. The organization is pretty flawless now, and we never expect to have to undergo any more big changes from this structure.

In the process we made SO MANY changes, that we had to flush everyones selected categories and styles from their submissions. WE KNOW, this is a big bummer as I myself have 45 of my own submissions that I need to re-select the categories & styles for.

PLEASE: Take the time to go into your Portfolio Manager and re-select the styles, and categories for your submissions. Until that's done, all of Artician's submissions are just a big ball of unorganized mush. So we need your help here! At first we thought we would be able to do it on our own, but as the organizational structure continued to change, we realized it's out of our hands, and it would be best if everyone did their part to re-categorize their own submissions. FYI: Nothing like this will EVER happen again. Big apologies.

Bugs & Requests
You are experiencing ANY bugs, issues, or simply have questions about any of these new features including submit, portfolio, categories, styles and the rich text editor - Please post it in here.

Before you post any bugs or issues, please press "ctrl + r" on the page you may be having issues on. This will clear your browser cache, and accept all the new Javascript code, and CSS styles that have been applied to these new features and sections.

Other info: If you are using Safari, or Opera - The thumbnail cropper was having serious issues in both of these browsers, more so in Opera. We had to completely disable this feature of Opera users, otherwise it would spike your CPU, and memory and most likely result in your browser crashing. Safari is not such an issue, I'm not sure if KnightAR disabled it for Safari, but regardless we will be working on it.

Thanks
Big thanks to KnightAR for his hard work and dedication to completing these features. Digi also did a some good work, including some nice management features in our Artician Admin Console. Oh and a big thanks to Eric for sitting on his ass all day.....Hehe...no just kidding, I was along side working with both KnightAR, and Digi, to make sure the front-end looked / worked well.

Another big thanks to all of YOU for keeping our motivations high, reporting bugs, and provided thoughts, opinions, and suggestions - and for giving us all the support we need to keep things kicking around here.....Artician is very close......

Again, Keep it real, more update to come....
