Web Graphics Layout for Joomla!

My experience is in print design, but I'm trying to teach myself web graphics. I am not ready to dive into the development side of things yet, like coding. I want to get the graphics side down before I attempt to wrap my head around that stuff.

I'm looking for some insight and tips on creating layouts for templates to be used with Joomla or Wordpress.

A friend of mine works for a website development company and they are prospecting me as a potential hire in a few months. They are currently working to utilize Joomla in their workflow. So I want to be prepared to impress them a bit.

Thanks!

-Shawn

X/HTML 5, XHTML 2: A Conesus of Usage?

So there is a projected release of 2010 for X/HTML 5.
A possible 5-10 year release projection for XHTML 2.

X/HTML 5 is already usable - so I wonder:
What is everyone using/planning on using?
Are the edgy developers of today already making the swap or are we sticking with our guns until an official release date?
Are these considered bleeding edge and not to be used in production environments?

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML_5 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XHTML#XHTML_2.0

* I personally am leaning towards X/HTML5 for the use of the canvas tag. I've already generated graphs on the fly with it using Javascript. The possible uses for it are endless.

Developers don't need to rely on flash to get visual data dynamically generated. But this makes it easier to obtain those visual representations.

Also see: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/previewofhtml5/

Leaving Your Other Social Networks

From the creation of this account I could tell that my social networking experience was going to change for good. And all I have to say is, ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME! I'm sure I am not alone when I say that I am tired of the overzealous, over glorified networks we are all used to. Granted every one had its own use and function in itself.

Myspace: Do I really have to give any input on this one!?

deviantArt: Now Ill give credit where credit is due. deviantArt isn't a bad network, but for those looking for exposure, advanced critique, and a good user experience beyond people they know you might as well walk away. deviantArt's network seems to pride itself on it's members of a higher skill set, those with the cash to advertise there art and prints rather then raw talent, and own corporate deals. This leaves all that undiscovered talent in the background on a shelf in a dark hallway closet of this mansion of a network to collect dust. Not to say that you wont get a nice little update almost daily about favored works though =D But don't expect an intelligent critique to come along (Basicly "OMG SO PRETTY!" said a million different ways) very often regardless of a subscription.

Facebook: I never really got into the whole Facebook trend. Granted about three months ago I create my account to see what it was all about and saw it as nothing but a rearranged version of myspace (well now vica verca considering Myspace development is taking ideas such as integrated chat features from Facebook and implementing them into there network) without the extreme customization abilities. But where it lacked in customization it made up for in ease and a smooth looking general user interface.

So as of late I find myself ignoring my Myspace updates (haven't even logged in, in about two days) quickly glancing at my unintelligent deviantArt comments and multitude of favorites without a single word. =) Simply put I have MOVED TO ARTICIAN! Created a brand new shiny "clean" and "dirty" badge to display upon those left behind social networking sites and called it a done deal! You can find those badges right here!

Screens:

Showcasiing Websites on This Site??

Hello. I'm new to this site and would like to pay my compliments to it's creators. It is awesome.

I'm hoping it can help me to get some work and I'm looking to get some direction and advice from users.

Just a little background on myself...

I come from a software engineering background: mainly embedded realtime, unix based systems designed using OO and implemented in C++. I have experience with tcp/ip based distributed software systems with web based clients, databases, Linux system and application software, device drivers and of course CGI software.

During my career in software development I have always dabbled in web development, primarily back-end. I've been on the net since it's inception, used to use gopher and had my first web page in 1993. Long story short, I left the marketplace for several years and during that time delved more deeply into web design/development and have done a little bit of freelance work at this point. When I look around at what other designers are doing I want to raise my own bar. I'm looking for help and for opportunities.

My experience is broad rather than deep. I can do a bit of everything, but nothing that well. I would like to find some work where I can deepen my knowledge of any of the following areas: 1) Ruby on Rails, 2) PHP/mySql, 3) Design: I.e. using Photoshop to create good looking mockups, Fireworks to move to HTML and CSS, and how to do that quickly and effectively.

So in general I'm just looking for some guidance from other developers on how to make that happen.

Specifically, I'm wondering how web developers are using this site to showcase websites they have developed. I can upload a screen shot of a site, but I see know where to actually link to that site when I Submit a website.

Thank you and I look forward to hooking up with other developers here.

All the best!

Free online creativity tools

Introduction
So don’t have money for Photoshop or Fruity Loops studio and don’t want to pirate them ether but suffering from urge to create something?
Well another wave of free fully functional in browser applications is rising with some features desktop apps do not even have And those are built in Web 2.0 communities built around Creative Commons which means that you can create/share/remix/browse/favorite/discuss/collaborate
So here is list of best example I know of.

Hobnox
Well this is tool built by Andre Michell(at least partially) that allows to create music of many types and has pretty cool interface and range of virtual tools.
Even if you are not music creator or not familiar with such way of making music you can still be interested as it includes community and support Creative Commons license which means that you can listen stuff for free, share and use it under some conditions for free and sometimes even remix other people works all thanks. Tough you need to register.

Aviary
Well this is whole collection of visual design tools. Not all tools are out and those that are are already pretty amazing.
It includes:
Phoenix – raster image editor alike to Photoshop
Peacock – visual laboratory. This one is harder to describe as it is mmm as I call it procedural/generative effect/image creation tool. You can use different filters/effects/transforms/generators available and combine them together to get cool effects/abstract art/fractals. If it still sounds confusing check video here.
Raven – and this is vector graphics editor. Not much to say here except that it is pretty decent editor.

And it comes packed with very well made community features. You can instantly upload stuff, use other creation licensed under CreativeCommons and it automatically show up sources from which work was made (be it effects or stock pictures or anything), shows derivative works that used this one as source and provides all other more common community features.

Sumo Paint
Well there is not much to say This one is clear PhotoShop but in browser, for free, with community included Again create/save/load/share/favorite/remix etc etc. Supports creative commons license which means that authors can easily specify on what conditions people can use it for free.

Wonderfl
Well this site is little bit strange and geeky. It allows coding Flash stuff in browser and publishing it under CC or MIT licenses which hallow free usage and remixing options so works are published as opensource code that compiles in browser. So you can edit/rewrite it and see results without need of Flex/Flash studios or any other complex products for Flash creation.

Aside from "in browser compiling" another cool feature is that it tracks who used what, which allows seeing how creations evolve. One guy created experiment, another took and used it differently, then third merged it with his own and we end up with some incredible stuff. Here for example such tree of evolution of code with cool results.

SourceBinder
This tool some how relates to Aviary Peacock and Hobnox Audiotool in terms of interface. Basically it is online tool for procedural animations/effects/visualizations.

Unfortunately I have no idea what license they use but they have features like sharing works sources and tracking of source/derivative relations among the works.

Onyx-vj
Well this thing probably is less usable but still worth mentioning. It is orientated on using video/animation remixing/merging to get something different. So you have number of “layers” where you can drop video files or flash effects/animations and manipulate those layers in same way you manipulate layers in Photoshop to get different result.

P.S
Probably that’s it for now. I will be updating this over time as I am shore there will be lot more to come Do you have something to add?

PHP Secure Image Uploading

Hi, my name is Rob... and I'm a development junkie.

This is my dilemma:

I've been googling for hours and I am nervous as to if i can create a secure PHP script that will allow the uploads of only JPG, GIF and PNG files.
I'm fluent in PHP for the most part except for when it comes to flat file storing, and apparently file uploading.

Currently I am developing a project that will be a resource for web designers to post portfolios of their work online. It will eventually be a high traffic resource. In order to post their work, they have to upload it righttttt? Ya well, not my area of expertise. I thought, and still think, I am capable of completing the project but I am outsourcing to you "articianors"

From what I read, allowing file uploading is like opening up a huge gaping hole for users to attack your server. I expect no less. I understand that hackers can create scripts within image files that can be executed on command, therefore solely checking for MIME types upon upload is worthless. I heard doing getimagesize() may be a way around that, to verify that the file being uploaded is truely an image... However, I've also read that can have a security hole as well.

Would someone who has expertise in this area be able to shed some light on my situation?? I need to learn! In all, I am asking; what is the best way to check if a file being uploaded is truely an image (jpg, fig, or png) and not something malicious

Recently I've been looking into schools for web design. I'm interested in learning about web design on my own, so starting with what courses teach seems like a good idea. Any arguments against that are welcome.

Any online resources would be great as well.
Traffic Marks

Traffic Marks is a web-based SEO app that identifies so-called hub sites that usually rank in at least 3 of the top 10 ranking sites for your given keyword. SEO experts say that just one link from these sites is more secure in getting first page position than 100 different incoming backlinks from unknown websites! Until now, tools that identify these sites belong to the domain of expensive software only big SEM firms can afford.
Traffic Marks now brings the ability to hone in and pinpoints these authority sites to the home user. Best of all, its free.

Check it out!

Hey I was wondering if this was possible. I was thinking of using a rollover image in a section of my site but not in the normal sense in how the image you put your mouse over changes but rather when you put your mouse over a button another image (the banner image in this case) changes.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
