Comment On Each Other's Works

I'm one of those artists that enjoy hearing others opinions on my work. As such, I thought it'd be fun if a little thread was started where people who wanted comments on their work could post requesting said comments.

However, for this to be fair there needs to be some rules. If you post a comment request and someone does comment on your work, please repay their kindness by going to their gallery and posting your own comments and thoughts. If there are specific works you'd like commented on please post links to them here. If you'd just like someone to check out your gallery and comment on whatever they like, just link to your gallery.

So, I'll go first. I'd really like some comments on my latest two works, Hannah and the Ghost and Bunny in the Washer. If there are any other works in my portfolio you'd like to comment on please feel free to do so.

Hopefully this will lead to some great feedback for everyone.

Cheers.

Free Drawing Program

Right, so after a little more then over a year of not being able to use my cintiq I am now finally am able to connect my tablet to my computer (needed to get a new computer... then once that happened I needed to buy a new video card... and money does not come easily for me so it too a good long while) and now open canvas, my handy little sketching program I like to play with when not working on a serious project as well as right now the only program I can afford at this time at the price of free, doesn't want to open on me. So I am in need of a nice free drawing program I can use for my doodling purposes... before I go nuts from not being able to draw with my tablet after finally thinking that I could.

I'm not looking for something crazy involved like photoshop, just something that I could do sketches at the LEAST on. Preferably with layer options.

Childrens book: digital or traditional?

Hiya.

I am currently working on a childrens book for school, and am planning on possibly sending it in to some publisher once I get the "dummy" all finished.

But, this all got me a little curious about what medium people would prefer; digital or traditional?

Somehow, I've always liked the idea of traditional childrens books better than digital ones. I'm not even sure I've seen any digitally colored ones. (Not that I'm an expert on the subject.)

But, yeah, I'd like to know what you all think; digital or traditional and why or why not?

ok default setup in PS when using a pressure senstive pen when using airbrush appears to be set to air

This means if i do a long stroke, as i come to the end of the stroke and naturally lift the pen off the tablet i end up with the stroke becoming thinner and sharper which is exactly what you dont want as this goes against all the airbrushing 101 rules, you always come off the paint first before releasing the air.

How can i set PS up so that the pen pressure is set to paint and not air?

Inaccurate airbrush colouration when airbrushing digitally

Hi,

I've been airbrushing for years in a freehand 'giger' style using just black and white.

the problem I have is that I cant find a way for PS to replicate the natural overtones that real airbrushing in this style produces.

When you use a real airbrush and use black it produces a 'brown' tone when your not doing a fine line.

When you switch to white and you spray over black you get a blue colouration.

these overtones of brown and blue make for a naturally more interesting image than if it were merely shades of gray.

Unfortunately this is exactly what the digital world produces when you use just black and white, its simply too 'digital' and logical.

To combat this problem I'm left with only one option and thats to use other colours to get the effect I'm after.

Is there anyway at all that this natural effect can be re-created in photoshop?

does Corel Painter behave in the same manner?

thanks for any help/advice with this issue.

Diffuser Help

Hello~

I've been looking in to purchasing a diffuser for my bounce flash, its a Weston W-18 and while I was looking at Sto-Fen diffusers I noticed it was nowhere to be seen on their list of flashes. So I did some google'ing and no luck XD

I was looking for something similar to this. I came across the LumiQuest and saw some interesting things there I might like to try, including the UltraBounce... but from the image it seems a little... I dunno... flimsy, compared to a Sto-Fen diffuser. I was also looking for something less obtrusive, so I could just pop it on my flash and head out with friends or to an event like a convention.

Has anyone here had experience with any LumiQuest products (maybe opinions on the snoot as well, it looks fun)?
Would it be at all possible for me to get a Sto-Fen Omni Bounce for my unlisted flash?

I recently grrabbed the PLE of Vue 7.5 xStream seeing as it claims it can work as a plugin for other 3d software. Vue looked like it had some really nice environmental landscapey things happening and the plugin-ness is a huge bonus for people like me who cbf compositing and suck at switching headspace for different programs.

However, I can't seem to get it to work in plugin mode. It seems to work fine in standalone mode, and I've followed what instructions I can find in the manual pdf for installing it and sticking in the menu, but every time I click on something, anything in Vue's Lightwave menu, instant crash.

Not very useful

I've found a few new plugins in the plugin list thingo that look Vue related (they have Vue such and such in the description) so it looks like the plugins have theoretically been imported, so it's just not working.

On the offchance anyone has managed to get this setup working, help please!

I've recently been very interested in trying out HDR photography, but my attempts have failed miserably.

I figured it was because my camera didn't have any kind of auto-bracketing option (that I know of), but there's got to be a way around it.

I have a Nikon D40 (very basic camera) with the kit lens and a Nikkor 55-200mm zoom lens, an wireless remote, and a sturdy tripod (not the best, but its good). Even with the remote I'm getting ghosting in the image because the camera and/or tripod are moving ever so slightly when I change the shutter speed.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips they'd like to share or equipment options I can look at (I'm running on a part-time worker budget, so I can't get too crazy right now).

Thanks!

100 Stranger- The Challenge

A week ago, i took up a challenge to photograph 100 strangers - 100 people I had never met, each holding a sparkler. I chose to complete the project around a very popular parade here in salt lake city, and I must tell you it was a fantastic experience. if you take a look below, you can see the results, or if you look at my portfolio you can see the individual images.

so here is the Mission-should you choose to accept it (sorry I couldn't refuse the cheesy show reference): Photograph 100 people you have never met. Its time for you to step outside your bubble, and truly do something challenging with your photography, and this is your chance.

You can choose to complete the project all at once like I did, or you can spread it out over time.

You can incorporate a unifying them like i did, or just stop a stranger and ask for a portrait.

The only two Rules I will impose on the challenge:
If you have ever met the person, even once- then they are disqualified, don't include them. (please don't let that stop you from photographing them, but adding them in the project would be counter-productive, and you wont grow as an artist)

If They don't know you are taking their portrait, that also does not count. I will ask that you stop the person and ask permission to take their photo, otherwise its just classical street photography, but is very different from what this project will be.

I promise you if you take this challenge, it will free you in soo many ways as an artist- it will ease fears you may currently have when working with models, it will allow you to see that there is something interesting to photograph in nearly every person in the world. You may even find, as I have, that the act of pushing yourself photographically i this way will give you a mental clarity that only comes from being truly focused on a task. (what some people call a zen feeling, if you have never felt this kind of focus in your work, then you are in for a treat.)

Once you start posting your 100 stranger photos, come here and post links so we can all see your progress. and if you have questions or need suggestions just ask.

Creativity's Court

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong area, but it seems to me the most logical choice.

Welcome my fellow articians to Creativity's Court.

This is my attempt to breathe some life into the forums, as well as help my fellow artists break past the pesky artists block that seems to find us all at one time or another.

Now I know that there is a group setting in the works, but seeing as how it is not finished yet I have decided to set this up as a sort of unofficial group for now. Articians first group.

Creativity's Court is designed primarily with writers in mind, but will be opened to artists for any medium. Some of the prompts may just be a bit harder to portray in a medium such as photography or traditional art. Still I would love to see what your oh so creative minds can come up with

So what exactly is Creativity's Court, you ask? It is a place where artists can come to share their art with other members of artician. Each week I will post a prompt or theme on which submissions must be based. The point of this is to help artists get past any writers/artist block they may be having, as well as giving them more exposure since they will be posting to a (hopefully) active group of people. It will also be a chance for those who wish to improve their skills to practice and (hopefully) get critiques/constructive comments.

This is not a competitive group for the time being, but depending on how things fair, I may introduce a contest aspect once the actual group aspect has been implemented on the site.

Instructions For Writers:

1. The piece you submit MUST contain the prompt word for word unless otherwise stated.

2.Please post the prompt name at the top of your submitted post (above the title if it has one)

3. Please highlight where the prompt is in your piece (ie. bold, italics, change the color of the prompt words)

4. You may post your entry in the thread, but please provide a link back to the original for those who wish to comment on it. Also if your piece is really long you may wish to post a summary or excerpt instead along with a link to the full piece. Please use your digression regarding the length.

5. I will not stop you from entering mature content, but please do not post it in the thread. If your entry contains mature content please post it in a link and make sure to post a warning along with it.

Rules For Visual Artists:

1.The piece you submit must have a theme related to the prompt. Please post how you think it relates to the theme in the description.

2. Do not post the entry in the thread, post a link to the piece in your portfolio. I am sorry if this seems unfair but posting visual pieces may slow down the loading time for other people who may be viewing the forum.

3. If the entry contains mature content please post a warning.

4. Please post the prompt/ theme in your submission post.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone has any suggestions for prompts/ themes please do not post them in the thread, but feel free to message me with them. It just makes things easier if only one person is posting the prompts.

I will try to post prompts every Sunday night, giving anyone who wishes to participate a full week to submit their entries. Remember that this is only for fun, submissions are not mandatory for any particular week, just enter when you want.

Also suggestions are always welcome, please message me if you have any.

Don't forget to check the next this post every once in a while for announcements and the prompt of the week.

Finally, have fun!

PROMPT OF THE WEEK

Prompt #1: "Beneath the broken"
Prompt # 2: "Forgive and forget"

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

(None as of yet)

As the topic would already illustrate, I'd like to think of this as a place for you film shooters out there to hype and promote your favorites.

As I suppose a limit of sorts might be drawn, try to pick some different sorts, and share a few words as to why.

Me?

1. Ilford HP5+ : My favorite black and white 400 speed, lovely grain, tones, and contrast. Sharp for others of it's speed.

2. Fuji ACROS 100 : My number one 100 speed, tack sharp, super fine, contrast and rich tones. The speed can be restricting, but for landscapes or anything still, it's lovely.

3. Fuji Velvia 50 : It's a close call putting it up here because of cost ($11.49 here) but I really do dig saturation and shoot a lot outdoors.

In older issues of The Workbasket, there are one or two issues with an ad at the back advertising a glaze that they put over dried or un-dried flowers. The only part of the advertisement I really remember is a phrase similar to "Dries like porcelain." Behind this they have a photo of a cluster of flowers on a mirror coated in this thick glassy glaze. Look up porcelain glaze and you find nothing but tinted coats for sculpted works and look up flower glaze and all you'll find are natural pottery glazes made of plant oils. I was just wondering if anyone knows the name of the product or something similar.

Okay, everyone.
This is a weird topic.
I was wondering how to go about in making a portfolio because on Deviantart they started this fancy new thing called 'Portfolio: The Awesome Version'. (sounds stupid, but if you take a gander at it doesn't look half bad.)
Now, they ask you want you want the portfolio title to be. Your name, your trade name or your studio)
Thats where I stop and go 'Huh.'
Now, I'm small time.
I'm not anywhere near good enough to get commissions and all that jazz. But I want to look professional for when I do.
Art is my passion, and I was raised that when I go somewhere and want to be respected, I need to present myself in a way that would be respected. (cue 'Sharp Dressed Man')
Thats why I'm strongly leaning towards my real name. Following this trend of having weird nicknames just isn't me.

How often has it happened, that you have been working laboriously for weeks (or days, whatever your style), on, let's say a portrait... agonizing over getting the skin tones just right, perhaps scrapping and starting over again, working on the form, depth, balance, composition, making it all juust right. You unveil it to the public, show it to a friend, and they compliment you on the one thing that took you 2 thoughtless seconds. .. "I like the eyelashes."

.. and I'm thinking, "wow, I worked for weeks on this and they like the 3 quickest strokes of my brush?"

"I like the grass"
"I like the shine in the eye"

And it's times like these when I can understand, in my own way, those Rothko paintings. It shows the brunt of the work-- the mixing of color and balance and consideration for composition-- and it forces the public to acknowledge that details do not make a painting.

Has anybody else gotten a bit miffed with this or is it just me? I tried to use Sketchpad with the tablet, but the workspace wouldn't show up on the tablet display. I tried to drag the Sketchpad work-space to the display, but to no avail. I could only successfully drag icons from my desktop to the display, and i could even open them on my main display with my pen. I havent tried to drag anything else to the tablet display, and I dont have Photoshop just yet (all new set-up I just started building yesterday), So I'm thinking it may just be a problem with Sketchpad.

I'd just like to know what the procedure is for transferring my workspace to my tablet display.
Any interest in a monthly theme group?

I was thinking, and realized that since I've been having trouble motivating myself in my own overambitious projects, I would really need an outlet where I can do something I haven't thought up "my self". So, I came to think, that it would be interesting to do a shared project.

My idea is that a group of people come up with a theme, and then spend one month working on it (or less, if one month turns out too much), and then we can all show up what we came up with at the end of the month. Good themes would be emotive ones that can be interpreted in many ways, eg. frenzy, distance, inside. A bad choice would be something objective, like different persona or stereotypical topics.

Anyone else up for this? I don't know if there's already something around, and if there's any way of creating "groups" on artician, but I suppose it could be kept within this thread if there are no other options.

I would like it to be strictly "traditional" art; drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.

model questions

If you've ever hired a model to pose for you (as opposed to pitching in your five bucks in a drawing group or art class), then I could use some advice.

Recently I met a woman here in town. She was an art model at one time. She saw some of my sketches & liked what I did, & we got to talking. She gave me her e-mail & a few days ago, I sent one. It was casual... "it would be great if you posed for me", that kind of thing. This morning in my inbox were two questions: How much would it pay & how long does she have to pose for? I read that & thought, "Ummm..." *cue cricket noises*

Now, I've worked with many models in my time but it was always as part of a group: Either when I was in college or for a drawing group meet. I've never hired a model personally before, just for me. Thus, my questions:

What should I suggest for her fee? What's the going rate these days, if there is one?

I was thinking of several poses 10 seconds each, maybe a couple of 2 minutes each, & two for a half-hour each. Pretty close to the standard thing for a drawing group or art class. Is this a good idea?

From what I've read here & there, when a model poses for a photographer, the two of them draw up a contract. Presumably I should do the same thing. What should be included in the contract, specifically? What are the most important points?

How can I protect myself against sexual harassment charges, etc., other than by keeping my hands firmly on the paper & not looking at the model the wrong way? There would only be the two of us there, after all. (In this case I don't think she would necessarily haul me into court for profit. So far we get along. But as we've only recently met, I can't be certain.)

Is there anything else I should know before I get the ball rolling?

Any informative advice would be appreciated.

yesterday I managed to procure a copy of Terragen 2

I loved terragen 0.9 a huge amount, (I used it to produce this: Deuxisland)
However when I started working with terragen 2 I found that nearly none of the previous techniques applied :/

Anyone else found the learning curve to be rather high?

Also any tutorials in terragen 2 would be greatly appreciated!
