I have been working around the clock trying to figure out what my new project will be and i have come to the idea fo a review site and also offer certain cheats or walkthroughs on certain games i play and i am also wanting people to send in stuff they figured out for their games and even videos they made themselves. but if anyone would be kind enough to look at the site and maybe help me brainstorm on what to do now that it is up.

New Portfolio Help

Hey guys, I'm new here and was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with something. I am creating a new web portfolio and have been having a hard time getting something to work. Here is the mock-up of what it is supposed to look like when finished. The thing that I am having trouble with is getting the blue border on the links over on the right to go above the other background image. You can see what I mean here. I have tried everything I can think of, from positioning and z-index to re-working the layout of the page. Nothing has worked so far. Thanks in advanced. All comments are appreciated. :]

hello articians, i've started trying to put together my web site using Swish Max2, and i need HELP ! i found a very decently explained tutorial video on youtube for starting a web site, but sadly the thing only explains how to set up a BG, and im stuck there now :S , so does anyone know where i could learn more ? i tried browsing throught the swish max tutorial website, but those have advanced tutorials that shoot over my head. any ways Help .

Web Design Courses

Recently I've been looking into schools for web design. What I'm not directly interested in which schools are best, but what the best courses teach the students ( whether it be Flash, CSS, techniques, usability, etc ). I'm interested in learning about web design on my own, so starting with what courses teach seems like a good idea. Any arguments against that are welcome.

Any online resources would be great as well. I'm learning CSS at w3schools and am already aware of resources such as smashingmagazine, zengarden, and various CSS galleries.

Question on Repeating BGs

I used to do some beginner to intermediate web design, but I'm still learning, so excuse the noobishness

So basically I'm trying to design some sort of layout with an image in the upper right hand corner. Content would be below the image. What I'm basically asking is whether or not it's possible to repeat two different backgrounds, one going to the left and one going down?

To explain in a nutshell (with the use of MS paint.. lol):

Over on my side I just learned of a horrific problem. Ok well no horrific, but really problematic.

The site I've been developing is working great. ......in firefox. I just learned the front images slides up and blocks the menu in IE. I've been fiddling around with the CSS for the image to figure out if theres something there I can change to fix it but it seems like IE just wants to ignore the code.

Hey I was wondering if this was possible. I was thinking of using a rollover image in a section of my site but not in the normal sense in how the image you put your mouse over changes but rather when you put your mouse over a button another image (the banner image in this case) changes.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

rounded corners

Ok, I'm having trouble figuring out how to create areas in the new site I'm designing to be rounded rectangles. I saw the topic on the single image to put all the corners in one file and that looks really good but I cant figure out how they go into the css and then how to make the html see it correctly and imput it in.

Any help?

So, you can check out my page at http://max.artician.com/. I spent a few hours today trying to customize it as much as possible. Need I remind you, this is literally the first time I have done any web development work in over 2 years. Anyways, after about 3 hours of work I realized my template only goes along with my profile page. There isn't a possible hack I could do where I could change the main background image for different pages, is there? I'm pretty upset I got this far and now I will have to trash it, heh. Obviously it's nothing jaw-dropping, but it was my first work in a long time and I would really love it if I didn't have to scrap it. All of my motivation I had to completely customize my profile has just gone out the window, lol.

Use CSS to reduce image HTTP Requests.

Today when we analyze web pages we commonly see 50 to 60 images per web page. The more round trip server requests you require in your pages, the longer your load time becomes. One way to reduce the number of HTTP requests is to combine adjacent images into one composite image and use CSS background position to show the correct part of the image in the provided space of a div, span, or other HTML elements.

Yesterday I took some time out to see if I could use this method on Artician, turns out it works fabulously. Here's what we got:

The image below is saving every page load on artician 15 HTTP requests. All rounded corners on Artician used to be composed of individual images top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right, and then called into the CSS. Even when an image is cached the image location is still checked and sent back to the browser. So here we have one image that's not even 1kb than contains 15 rounded corners used for various containers on Artician.

Rounded Corners:

Then I use CSS to make sure each rounded corner is being displayed in it's appropriate area for example:

Notice! they are all using the same background image, but I'm using a negative background position to hit the right spot on corners.gif.

Top left corner is using a basic CSS background position of "top left" which is the very top, and very left of the image.
Top right corner is using a background position of "right -6px" which mean all the way to right, but -6px down on the image.
Bottom left corner is using a background position of "left -12px" which mean all the way to left, but -12px down on the image.
Bottom right corner is using a background position of "right -18px" which mean all the way to right, but -18px down on the image.
The other CSS you see like "height:5px;" and "margin-left:5px;" are not effecting the background image, only accounting for the way I setup my rounded corner containers which can be see here. (view source for HTML and CSS)

Keep in mind: the CSS above has all the background properties in one declaration for optimization
The following CSS is using separate background declarations:

So there ya have it!
Combine all your little itty bitty images on a site, and let CSS do what it's got to do. This method has been tested in FF2, IE7, IE6, Opera, and Safari

Hope this is helpful! It really was for us, we already saved a total of 23 HTTP, and I got plenty more to do. The main page (logged out) went from 92 HTTP requests to 69.

IT'S DOT NET! Yeah, so... finally I made the layout. Though it's still a bit of a WIP, that's pretty much how it is going to look:

The spotlight thing I'm planning to do using javascript, shouldn't be too hard hopefully. The "meaaov opens" text over the online stats is going to be scrolling from left to right, also using javascript.

I only got two problems regarding it:
Firstly, whether it's a good idea to make it expandable horizontally. It could easily be done so, except every time the monitor would be wider than 1024 pixels, a large gap would be left between the spotlights and the ad and welcome boxes. If I just made it solid then this problem would go away, but it kinda sucks wasting pixels away like that.
Secondly, give me your opinions about the bottom lighting, and whether to keep it or not. I've had somebody say that it draws attention from the centre of the page and looks dodgy, so I want to confirm it.

Design work is done, other than smaller images needed for the content.

Coding is in progress, as you may notice, it still needs content, well it will be built into a CMS being made by our PHPer so I need to talk to him about all that.

What I need help with is, you may notice that in IE there are 2 little bugs.

EDIT: Ideas I plan for content is to split the content area up into 2 parts. Main part on the left with news and the like, and the second part on the right with polls and a 'sneak-peak' feature. These will be based on more than likely, simple CSS tables (the plan for this site is to keep it nice and simple). If that doesn't work, then of course images.
