PHP 5.4 on Gentoo and Emergence by Akujin

For the past year and a half I've been mainly developing the Emergence PHP Framework with Jarvus Innovations. The framework has a few notable advantages over other frameworks. In particular a custom file system that is maintained by the framework itself. This specific features enables another awesome feature called site inheritance. This basically means that when I create a new site in Emergence I can set a parent site for the new site. When a file is needed by the site it first checks the local file system and if it can't find it the framework asks the parent site for that file. This feature enables some amazing things.

Today I decided to check how Emergence would run in PHP 5.4. I started with a private virtual machine I have for my own personal portfolio. It's a simple virtual machine with only 1GHZ of guaranteed processing power and 512MB of guaranteed memory. I use Gentoo on this virtual machine so portage is the default package manager.

I started by running this command just to see what would happen.

sudo emerge dev-lang/php:5.4 --ask

Portage complained a little about not having =dev-lang/php-5.4.0 ~amd64 in the /etc/portage/package.keywords file.

After I added that line to package.keywords I was able to compile PHP 5.4.0 no problem.

After compiling portage reports that you will need to run this command to set apache to use PHP 5.4

sudo eselect php set apache2 php5.4

You will also need to run this command to set PHP 5.4 as the default command line version of PHP.

sudo eselect php set cli php5.4

Afterwards running php --version should yield

PHP 5.4.0--pl0-gentoo (cli) (built: Mar 6 2012 22:36:58)

At this point I ran sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart to check on how things were running before moving on.

The first thing I noticed was that the pecl extension apc wasn't working. The error I was getting was that a function that is part of apc doesn't exist. In Gentoo portage installs apc for you with the command

sudo emerge dev-php/pecl-apc however it wasn't properly configuring with PHP 5.4. Instead I had to get the pecl command line utility so that I could install it with pecl instead of portage. To do so I ran sudo emerge dev-php/pear. This command went onto install 6 relatively small packages that allowed me to then go onto run sudo pecl install apc.

At this point I actually had two versions of PHP on the machine at the same time but I had set 5.4 as the default in both apache and command line.

Portage likes to create separate configuration folders for each version of PHP installed so at this point a directory listing of /etc/php yields

drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Mar 6 22:41 apache2-php5.4

These folders contain the respective php.ini file for each of the given versions of PHP. Since the 5.4 install was fresh I knew I needed to configure a few things in the php.ini file first.

First I set the timezone to avoid the warnings PHP throws anytime a time function is used without this setting.

date.timezone = America/New_York

Since I installed apc manually with pecl I also had to add extension=apc.so to the php.ini file.

Then I went to the error reporting.

At first I set it to

error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE

But I was getting two peculiar errors from this. One of the errors is well documented in this bug report from PHP 5.3. Specifically when running PHP in strict mode it will report errors when you try to define a static abstract function. The reason for this as rasmus himself explains:

A static method belongs to the class, not to an instance of that class and since

you can't have an instance of an abstract class, static methods make no sense in

abstract classes. It is really that simple.

Personally I find this thinking to be stuck in the past and has a lot to do with the way OOP works in Java. Since by definition you are potentially redefining the method when extending the class it makes a lot of sense that you might choose to make the original an abstract method simply to force the new extended class to contain the said function.

Emergence uses this pattern for it's controllers. With the top level controller class being an abstract class RequestHandler containing an abstract static function handleRequest. Therefore any newly created class which extend RequestHandler must define their own static function handleRequest.

The other error that is actually new in PHP 5.4 has to do with having different parameters in the methods of an extending class from the parent. For example one of the errors was:

Declaration of User::save() should be compatible with ActiveRecord::save($deep = true)

The error was thrown by PHP because the child method save() in class User didn't contain the parameter $deep = true. Fortunately I later found out that removing E_STRICT errors in php.ini would suppress this issue.

So finally after running into these issues and changing error_reporting in php.ini to this value I was able to get Emergence to fully load.

error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE & ~E_STRICT

The issues I ran into were relatively small and when E_STRICT error reporting was disabled I was able to run the Emergence code base without issue. I'm looking forward to playing with traits.

com muito prazer que anuncio que as novas verses do SleepyPOST, incluindo o novo mdulo que ser chamado de SleepySHOP, tero editor de texto rico. Antes nosso sistema de insero de contedo usava-se de uma "textarea" simples, onde qualquer formatao de texto exigia o uso de html puro ou de "bbcode", o que impedia os usurios mais leigos de inserirem efeitos em seus textos. Como o desenvolvimento de uma ferramenta de Rich Text demanda muito trabalho e conhecimento, acabamos por implementar uma ferramenta open-source j existente. Verificamos diversas ferramentas no mercado, iniciamos uma bateria de testes exaustiva para encontrar o que melhor se adapt-se ao Sleepy, pois algumas ferramentas tornaram-se pesadas demais e fugiram da proposta do Sleepy que dentre outras coisas, ser uma ferramenta rpida e estvel.

Mas o importante desse post informar que encontramos sim, uma ferramenta que funcionou bem, pode ser implementada no cdigo do SleepyPOST e no SleepySHOP sem gerar "Bugs" no cdigo original.

Continuem nos visitando para obter maiores informaes sobre o SleepyPOST e futuramente sobre o novo mdulo isolado, o SleepySHOP.

Inicialmente o Sleepypost era pra ser apenas uma central de administrao de websites comerciais, porm seus componentes foram crescendo e ficando mais poderosos. E atualmente o Sleepypost tende a tornar-se um CMS muito robusto, simples e confivel. Todo o projeto demanda muito trabalho e confiana no sucesso. Infelizmente nem sempre a vida facilita e faz com que o tempo e a cabea para o desenvolvimento fiquem escassos, mas conforme tenho tempo vou incluindo novas ferramentas. Umas das primeiras etapas j foi concluda, que o gerenciamento de meta keys, gerenciamento de e-commerce com mdulos do pagseguro e paypal j embutidos e sistema de contato. Existem algumas verses que j incluem Galeria de imagens, que tornou o sistema ainda mais eficiente. O Sleepypost pode tornar-se tambm um sistema de blog muito interessante, mas no geral, no essa a proposta. Por enquanto a funcionalidade do sistema o principal foco, mas conforme o mesmo vai sendo construidos, mudanas nos layouts vo ocorrendo, e espero que o mesmo evolua esteticamente como est evoluindo em suas funes.

Estou contente de receber apoio de pessoas importantes para mim no desenvolvimento do projeto. Quero agradecer a todos.

So I was checking my email, which includes a feed to CNET News. I saw this post a few days ago:

I don't get to it right away, being sidetracked with other things. I see another CNET News post reference Google Wave, so I decide to look into it after all.

I have the video open right now and it's a half hour in. I am thoroughly impressed. Congrats to the guys down at Google for yet another stunning creation.

In fact, I'm having trouble typing out the rest of this post because I get distracted with new cool features that they're showing.

Anyway, it's spectacular. I can't wait for it to be released.

Here is a quick/easy way to post to twitter from the command line interface.

Alright - so lets bust out the baby powder and get ready to put our Domains in their place!

Anyone got a website? *raises hand*

Anyone have an alias for said website, such as mywebsite.com and mywebsite.net? *keeps hand raised*

Anyone feel like letting people stay at the non www versions of these domains or having them stay at .net? *puts hand down*

Alright then!

Lets begin!

So basically heres my situation.

I want to have my domain sterlinghamilton.com to be consistent.

So if someone goes to http://sterlinghamilton.com it should change to http://www.sterlinghamilton.com - and if they go to either variation of .net it should go to the .com version!

BasicallyI want my domain rolling on dubs! *laughs to self*

So how would I do that?

Unfortunately backhanding is not the solution to everything. (Although it does solve a myriad of problems!)

I think for this issue I will use an .htaccess file!

Heres what I am thinking (its short and sweet and later if I feel like making it more efficient I will):

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^sterlinghamilton.com

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.sterlinghamilton.com/$1 [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^sterlinghamilton.net

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.sterlinghamilton.com/$1 [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.sterlinghamilton.net

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.sterlinghamilton.com/$1 [R=301,L]

The first line is allowing us to modify the URL.

The following sets are the rules I wanted to implement.

If it has a .com but it isnt rolling on dubs (www) then put dubs on it!

If it has a .net but it isnt rolling on dubs (www) then put dubs on it!

If it has a .net and it has dubs (www), then make it .com

Simple right?

That should do it. *quickly tests it so he doesnt feel stupid*

Finding All Domains In Ensim by planck

Nifty thing to know.

There is a file in Ensim that keeps track of all domains (aliases included).

Its generally stored at:

/etc/virtualhosting/mappings/domainmap

Thats nifty if you need to keep track of whats on the serveror check domain statuses, expiration datesetc.

Oh Im sorrydid I hear someone in the audience say they wanted more?

Whats that you say? You want to grab all the domains from that list? Just the domains? Not the site numbers or anything?

UGH. Fine.

This command will work fine:

grep '.'\ /etc/virtualhosting/mappings/domainmap | awk '{print $1}'

Here's a little "grep-fu" to produce a list of not just primary site domains...but their aliases as well!

egrep 'Server(Name|Alias)' /var/www/vhosts/*/conf/httpd.include|awk '{print $3}'|grep -v www.*|grep - '^.*\..*\..*$'|sed 's/:80//'|sed 's/:443//'|sort -u

You should be root when running this or you will run into issues.

Plesk Bash Script to turn off Mail Service! by planck

So we have our own mail service here at Exyst.

Due to that fact - we do not use Plesk's mail service.

If that mail service is on when we create a site through Plesk, then mail sent by the server isn't handled properly.

This would include contact forms and anything that a Web Application would shoot out.

Is that a big issue? Yeah...it is.

So I wrote a script that finds all sites that have the service on - and then it turns it off.
