I remember living in Manila back in the earlier part of the 21st century. It was a historic city and much of it were tragic scenes of the past: From the "Walls of Intramuros" that reminds me somewhere back in time, Manila was this small patch of land corralled by the Spaniards, to the statue of "Memmorare Manila 1945" that displays the fate of those Filipinos who perished back in World War Two. There was also this small, hidden Christian Temple that has a marker saying "The Japanese tied several Filipinos on this stone post where they were whipped and burned alive." Then there is the Luneta Park (Now called Rizal Park) where the local hero Dr. Jose Rizal was shot by the Spanish Authorities. There is also an epitaph for the 3 martyr priests. The Manila Grand Opera House, a supposedly famous land mark of the bygone era of Philippine cinema was demolished just like that and awaiting the same fate is the now gloomy Metropolitan theater. But what intrigues me the most, is a small spot at the corner of Teodora Alonzo Street and Dorotheo Jose Street. The place was the site of one of the most tragic earthquake disasters back in the 60's. The Ruby Tower was once a 6-story apartment building home for many Chinese/Flipino families. It was August 2, 1968. An earthquake that registered 7.7 on the Richter scale hit Metro Manila and the rest of Central and Northern Luzon killing 1,700 people; injuring 3,000 individuals; and displacing 148,000 more in Luzon. Estimates of property and infrastructure damage were placed at $2 billion. I was very young at that time and only my old folks told me that the collapsing building sounded like a great bomb just dropped on the heart of Manila. Reports of 260 people buried alive by its rubble filled the headlines. Allegations ensued that the building was poorly built; that low-grade materials were used extensively in its construction. Soon thereafter, rumors emerged that its owners and builders hurriedly left the country to avoid criminal prosecutions. Using my poser Pro Program, I would like to create a scene based on this as a tribute to that dreadful event, and as a reminder that the tragedy should never happen again.

"Varyag" should be able to carry about 50 aircraft carrier. Which fighter is the F-15, AWACS will be temporarily helicopter carrying early warning radar. China may also used to test the "Varyag" FT -9 trainer to train aircraft carrier pilots. In addition, China may be developed AWACS aircraft modified with the transport -7. Y - 7 used for passenger transport can be arranged 50 seats inside space than the E-2C early warning aircraft, large. However, due to the transported -7 smaller engine power take-off runway is long, so it may not be used for the "Varyag", but for the future of China's domestic carrier. Few years later, the aircraft carrier "Varyag" when in actual use, equipped with the following scale: F -15 fighter aircraft 12-24 early warning helicopters, modified by the card -31 or straight -8 3 , and another straight-9C anti-submarine helicopters around 6.
Needless to say, "Varyag" mission is to establish the basis for the use of aircraft carriers for the Chinese navy. At present, the Chinese Navy will have three aircraft carriers, "in 2025, plans to build six aircraft carriers," the rumors. Although China has not officially released such information, but the whole, this figure with the actual situation should differ significantly. "Varyag as a training aircraft carrier, China will start the new domestic carrier. The new aircraft carrier displacement should be in the 50,000-ton, may be used in carrier-based aircraft to take off the way both may Ski Jump is also possible ejection. In the construction of two of the aircraft carrier, China may use the domestic nuclear power plant to the construction of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. This calculation, within the next 15 years, China will have a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, two domestic conventionally powered aircraft carrier, and the existing "Varyag". The three aircraft carrier "Varyag" outside form, respectively, in the "Maintenance", "training" and "combat" phase shifts system.
Japanese media said to the Chinese navy may be concentrated in the South China Sea and East China Sea in both directions using the carrier may need to set up two groups can shifts "carrier system", so the final total of six aircraft carriers. Chinese Navy aircraft carrier battle group in Japan lifeline of the South China Sea and East China Sea rampant intimidation, but also near the Diaoyu Islands.

The US Government spends US$ 2 billion per week on wars in foreign countries while its citizens struggle to keep open the doors of museums and cultural centers due to government cuts.

The Industry of War gets priority over preservation of the Arts. This is shameful. Republican Senator Michael Baumgartner are you listening?

This is an online interview with Karen Mobley, a museum trustee, a long time volunteer for the art committee of the museum, an artist whose work has been in the art auction and in the museums sales and rental program. She is a donor, member of the museums Legacy Society, which means she has promised a portion of her estate to the museum. A special thanks to Candess M.Campbell for arranging this interview.

Can you share with the readers a short history of The Mac?

MAC stands for Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Eastern Washington is a unique region of the country. In 1918, state government recognized this distinction designating a second historical societythe Eastern Washington State Historical Societyto compliment the mandate of Washington State Historical Society established in 1891 and ensure a full representation of Washingtons diverse heritage. MACs collecting encompasses generational diversity of Washington citizens amplifying voices of those who are not always heard. The informal exploration, discovery, and connections with ideas and people that occur within programs unique to museums is empowering and equalizing for Washington citizens.

Founded in 1916, is the largest cultural organization in the Inland Northwest with 5 underground galleries, the historic 1898 Campbell House, Joel E. Ferris Library & Archives, an orientation gallery, caf, store, education center, community room and the Center for Plateau Cultural Studies.

The MAC campus (expanded in 2001 with a $30 million renovation) also includes an auditorium and outdoor amphitheater. The exhibits and programs focus on three major disciplines: American Indian and other cultures, regional history and visual art.

Our collection, with over 39,000 American Indian, 22,000 regional history, and 1,500 art objects including the 252,109 records archive is nationally renowned.

Attracts over 100,000 visitors annually including nearly 4,000 K-12 students.

The Kirkland Cutter designed Campbell House, one of the most popular museum attractions, is our largest artifact, with student and public tours staffed by trained volunteer docents, consistently our most popular attraction.

The MACs educational programs include vibrant student and family learning experiences such as Living History Day, the Plateau tribes Living Legacy tour and learning laboratory, Campbell House exploration and hands-on art activities in the art studio.

The MAC is an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and one of the first museums in the United States to be accredited by the American Association of Museums.

What is the importance of the MAC ?

The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture is the largest cultural organization in the Inland Northwest. The MAC is a repository of the artifacts from all of the Northwest Plateau tribes, many objects from the history of Spokane and a huge archive of photos from the region, the MAC has one of the few collections of art by Eastern Washington artists and is a gathering place for arts and history aficiandos from all around the west. The exhibitions at the MAC change. Right now the museum is gearing up for a travelling exhibition of inventions and reproductions of works by Leonardo DaVinci which opens in June of this year. The exhibitions are listed on http://www.northwestmuseum.org

MAC is an important contributor to the regions economy. Cultural travelers stay longer and spend more than other visitors. Event-related spending pumps revenue into restaurants, hotels and retail businesses. The MAC is the first non-metro market to land the international blockbuster Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius exhibit opening June 3, 2011.The exhibit is expected to attract 40,000 new visitors to the region. The MAC helps recruit and maintain businesses, serving as a barometer of the regions quality of life. The MAC contributes an estimated $10 million to our regions economy. The American Indian objects and sacred room will be unavailable to tribal members, which will cause significant cultural turmoil. The building will closed to the public, its collections inaccessible. An unoccupied facility creates the potential for vandalism and theft and will subject the neighborhood to unwarranted blight.

Why is it in danger of being shut down?

The MAC is basically a state agency about 60% of its budget comes from the state of Washington and about 40% comes from local sources such a grants, contributions, sponsorship and from the endowment. The whole state is having big budget challenges. The museum is not uniquely being targeted. There are also cuts to education, support to indigent people through health care and other services. It is a difficult time. The elimination of the state portion of the budget is way too much for the local community to absorb.

Karen Mobley is the Arts Director City of Spokane (Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius) since June 1997. Prior to this she was the Director of the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, WY and Gallery Director for University Art Gallery at New Mexico State University. She is a board member for the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, a member of the Spokane Public Radio Steering Committee, a Deacon for Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ and active in the Washington State Arts Alliance and Rotary 21. Karen is a working artist and poet. Her art work is represented in Spokane by Art@Work (the sales and rental program of the MAC).. She reads and performs poetry at events through the region.

She likes cats and is currently working to make the longest cat hair rope in the world.

If you want to help keep the Arts alive, please contact

Karen R. Mobley, Arts Director, City of Spokane,

Spokane Arts Commission, 808 W. Soon after I went back to Manila. I knew that a Tropical Storm is coming but I never realized that it was so strong(the HULK? and I learned it in a hard way. My butt is litterally smoking because we were stranded in NLEX(North Luzon Expressway) from 4pm to 9pm this was yesterday, Sep 26,2009. We were at the Meycauayan, Bulacan are when the bus stopped bec of traffic.
We heared on the news that NCR and other provinces is flooded because of the heavy rainfall. We waited for hours and hours, it's a good thing that the driver dit not turn off the TV so at least we are aware of what's going on. Some of the my co-passengers went off to buy food, while I remained inside and waited. Finally at around 9pm the bus started to move but because of the traffic we were not in Manila by until 10:30pm. The regular trip from Lingayen to Manila is about 4-5 hrs only traffic included but this time were sitting in the Bus for 5 hrs and the bus is not moving.
I am glad that we made it in one piece. I was planning to head straight home to our apartment at Boni, Mandaluyong but I heard that I was also affected by flood so I just decided to go straight Shaw Blvd where our office was located. Tired and hungry, I ate and headed straight to our sleeping lounge. I need to log-in at 12:30am for work but got to the office at 11pm so I just decided to go on half day. ;p Ondoy is the name of the typhoon! A name to remember.
