So I've been very actively searching for a new job the past 7 months or so, and in that search, I've joined a lot of popular job search sites. Recently I joined JobFox, which I found through a search of "best job sites." Seemed decent and gave me a few other options so I uploaded my resume, did my profile, etc. and then a few days ago, I get an email saying I've had my resume reviewed.

I was a little excited to get some feedback, but I was mostly skeptical--Figured it would be just an ad to pay to get it reviewed. They take it one step further: give you a scathing yet extremely generic review that does absolutely nothing to help you. Then the "reviewer" sums it up by asking for $400 or so to rewrite your resume. Uh-huh, sure. I deleted my "review" by mistake (I had wanted to keep it for laughs), but here are examples of this BS: JobFox Resume Critique.

I deactivated my account after this. I know lot of job sites offer services that require payment, but this came across as so scam-y that I'm not interested in being affiliated with their "service" and I'd recommend others avoid it as well. I think it's a little evil too to ask someone who likely doesn't have a job to shell out that kind of money.

This past week has been the first week of my first full-time job! I've been working for a watch retailer from home for about 3 years, making websites and magazine ads and the like. Now I'm in the office.. I have my own office, and I am basically the entire art department!

This whole "real job" thing is new for me... my parents have always been self-employed, so they don't have much to tell me about working in an office environment, and having a salary and benefits and whatnot. I'm really unfamiliar with the whole system and knowing what is expected of me. My boss has given me a lot of leeway and freedom, but frankly, not enough direction. I even had to sort of assume that my hours are 9 to 5. When I come in at 9, everybody is already there, and when I leave at 5, people are still around... so I'm not sure what's going on there, but nobody has said anything.

I have a lot of freedom with the job.. I'll sort of be building my own job, setting my own deadlines, and overseeing myself-- which is what I'm used to. ... There will be a lot to do. The thing about me, is instead of doing really well at 1 or 2 things, I do everything marginally well. Website design, Flash, Magazine ads, Print media, Video (and sound) editing and animation... So I'm a website designer, graphic designer, and multimedia designer. But I'm not completely stellar at any one area of those. I feel I have the best handle on website design, but everything I do still feels amateury, especially when I compare it to stuff I see here. This is why although I work with graphics, my portfolio here is illustration. That's really what I excell at, and any work i would be soliciting would be for illustration. But my background in design helps with illustration (like with book layouts), and vice versa.

It's so weird that as soon as I've started my job, I've started getting calls for website design from people I know. I guess telling them that I'm starting a fulltime job reminds them that I am a website designer,,, but... I'm busy now! I think? Maybe I can still take them on.. I don't know, I'm still figuring this out. I don't want to be on the computer when I get home, I might learn guitar instead.

Anyhow, if anybody has anything to say about starting jobs, or working with graphics, etc. I'd be interested in hearing it!

i thought i was pretty good at art, turns out its just drawing, i cant paint, colour, use any programs like photoshop or anything like that

But i really want to study art in university, i could use a bit of help in certain areas , especially colour, if anyone has any helpful tutorials or know of any i'd be fricken over the moon to check em out
